The need for a high-voltage source to drive aftermarket power amplifiers is as important as ever. High performance car audio amplifiers require plenty of clean undistorted signal voltage in order to achieve maximum performance. Shockingly many of today’s after market source units do not produce the proper signal voltage levels needed. Some of the best units are only rated for 4V RMS and most can barely even produce that. If you are lucky enough to have a source unit that will produce 4V RMS the only way to reach that output is with your volume level set at maximum at which your signal will more often than not be distorting. The typically rule of thumb used to avoid a distorted signal is to setup/tune your system at 3/4 volume and therein lies the problem. Even a high quality 4V source unit can have a difficult time reaching 1V RMS at 3/4 volume. Add a second or third amplifier to the chain and watch your signal drop even more.  

Now let's string this together and see what the possible effects are. Having a poor-quality signal going to your amplifier may not only cause a less than optimal sound level it can also make your music sound compressed and lifeless. In an attempt to combat this, you will to need to turn your Voltage Input Sensitivity (gain control) up on your amplifier. However now that the gain controls are turned up to achieve the sound level you want, you have also at the same time inadvertently increased the likelihood that your system will have more background hiss and possibly noise. How do we fix this you ask, by adding a line driver. A line driver will increase the signal voltage to a higher level thereby allowing you to turn the gain controls down and allow for greater noise rejection, lower background hiss and increased dynamic performance. 

The job of line drivers is now obvious, to boost the source unit signal in order to obtain optimal system performance. It is critical that the line driver does not induce any of its own noise or distortion into the system.
